Rory McIlroy has decided to give up his membership to the European Tour this year due to schedule changes. This is huge news for European golf. Rory is the most recognizable player from Europe, and is always looked at as their anchor in the Ryder Cup. For a player to keep their European membership they must play in a specific 4 events and he is only committing to play in 2 of them.

He also takes a big shot at the European Tour also by saying "...I guess my big thing is I want to play against the strongest fields week in, week out, and for the most part of the season that is in America." Yikes. Is he right in this statement...Yes, the best players are in America and play in America. But for him to say it and not take the easy way out by saying it is only due to scheduling is refreshing to hear honesty, but also surprising.

This is also huge news for the Ryder Cup. A European Ryder Cup rule is that if any European Player give up his membership at any point of their career they can never captain the team. If Rory McIlroy keeps his membership he would 100% be a captain at some point of his career. For him to give that up is pretty eye opening.

The 2019 season has started but its also considered by the top players I the world as their off season. It will be interesting to see if he actually does give up his membership this year, but as of right now that is his plan.
